Spring Planting

The first step to turning Sunshine into Moonshine begins right here on our family farm with the spring planting of our signature red corn. Shortly after planting, warm temperatures and a little rain cause the corn seed to send forth little shoots from the ground. This is the beginning of turning the sunlight into strong plants through photosynthesis. We always hope for the corn to be knee-high by the 4th of July, and after that, it shoots up like a rocket. As the stalks grow taller then little ears of corn begin to grow. They start out white inside and as they reach final maturity the color changes to a beautiful deep red and burgundy color we love. After final maturity, we pick our seed stock for the next year and send in the combine to gather the rest for storage in our on-farm grain bin.

Sustainability

Sustainability: We follow good agricultural practices to treat the earth well. We plant cover crops to build up our soil. We plant using no-till methods to prevent erosion. Our farm was placed in agricultural preservation in 2021 so it will forever be a farm. We rotate crops to vary what’s in the soil to reduce weeds and diseases. The leftovers from the distilling process make delicious feed for the beef cattle on our farm.
